How To Light a Pilot Light on a Furnace

February 20, 2020

When you have no heat, one of the reasons could be that the pilot light on your furnace has gone out. This is actually something you’d hope to see when you notice a problem with your heat, since it involves a simple fix.

As Easy As 1-2-3

Anyone can re-light a pilot light, but you’ll first have to locate the pilot/gas switch on your furnace. It should be towards the bottom of the unit. You’ll also have to locate the “Reset” button. It’s usually close to the pilot/gas switch, and it should be clearly labeled. Note that each furnace would have originally come with an instructions label for re-lighting the pilot light. If you can find this label and the text hasn’t worn away, follow those instructions. Otherwise, these general instructions should work.

1. Turn the pilot/gas switch to the “Off” position, and wait at least five minutes so the gas can dissipate. You definitely don’t want to have an open flame where there is gas in the air.

2. Turn the switch to the “Pilot” position, hold down the “Reset” button and bring an open flame from a long match or lighter to the pilot light opening. It should immediately catch.

3. Remove your flame, and hold the “Reset” button for about a minute. Slowly release the “Reset” button and make sure the pilot light is still lit. Turn the switch to the “On” position.
